Obsessive Fangirl Update

This was the final I sent over to the guys.

I decided to crop the figure since the final print is going to be a measly 1x1.5, so trying to show a whole figure on that scale is not good. At least this way you can see more of her face and details, even at such small scale.

Now I'm going to start on a related card "Glomp!" I'll keep u posted.

Last Update - Portrait Painting 3

Five more hours of painstaking detailing, and this is what I've amounted to:

How long total? I think in about a week's work it was over 10 hours. 12 to be more exact.

I call it "Crystal Masquerade." You can see why, right?

Kinda reminds me of a Katarina Sokolova, you can see her here.

Now I must rest. -_-

Update 2 - Portrait Painting 3

Another update, this time I played about with textures, and I dl'd some nifty brush sets.

Will keep working on it, it's starting to get there where I want it to.

KUNG FU PANDA was awesome!

Update -Portrait Painting 3

Added a second light source, as you can see by the soft yellowish glow, I'm actually gonna turn it off for now and include them later in the final.

Now the most labor intensive part of it all: painting and mixing. After 3 hours, this is what I came up with so far. Oh yeah, the total time it took to prepare the image from sketch to this (as seen in the last post): 45 min.

This is most likely gonna take longer than the last two paintings because this is going to be pretty complex, as I'll be showing you later as I go. For now I'm stopping here, and off to dinner I go.

Portrait painting 3

Starting yet another portrait exercise.

My first process, in Photoshop:

One of numerous sketches I've chosen for the final, scanned in at 75 dpi in Million Colors.

Scanned in, then add New Layer with lavender underpaint, set to Multiply.

Another new layer, this time I redraw the line art with dark blue color with hard Round brush.

New layer again, this time blocking in the basic shadows.

Yet another new Layer for the color, set at Multiply. Combination of blue/purple/orange as the color scheme.

More to come...

2nd Update - Portrait Painting 2

Finished product:

Came out pretty well, I think. Lost count on how long it too since the last update, I'm guessing total time it took was not more than 10 hours.

Onward now, to another project.

Another new project - Card game

Yeah, I've taken up another venture, this time in card games.

Yeah, some guys are setting up a new trading card game, about the geeks and fanboys/girls of comic and anime conventions. Sounded like fun, so I went for it. Here's their website:

Diving Dragon Games: Geekfight!

So far I only gotten down to one, out of three that I planned.

This one is called Obsessive Fangirl, should be self-explanatory, by the look of it:

Still need to work on it in some areas. Done all in Photoshop.

Update - Portrait Painting 2

Some update, worked tirelessly on this. Spent another good 3 hours I say

Added the sword and the background texture from the last session. Some more painting where necessary. I frequently use Curves and Hue/Sat in the mix.

I flattened everything out and did some final adjusting with Curves, Levels, some Unsharp Mask with Despeckle.

Looks good so far. I still need to add some detail here and there, on the coat and on the arm. I might add another element later on, but for now I'm taking my dinner break.

New Portrait project

Started on another portrait exercise. I know I'm still working on the other one, but I'm taking a bit of a break from it for a while until I get my head clear while working on something else.

Early sketch:

WIP so far ( 4 hours) in Photoshop:

As always I used myself as ref model to get the pose right. I still got lot more to do. The bg will be changed eventually.

BTW saw Incredible Hulk last night. Pretty good, though not as good as Iron Man. Pretty much the whole movie I was just waiting for that cameo from Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) which finally came at the end. lol.

To be continued...

Update - Portrait Painting 1 take 2

Tried the Liquify tool, it's amazing. Few more strokes here and there, some shrinking, nudging with Lasso, and this is the result:

I admit, I need to do more portrait exercises to get the facial structure correctly.

I hear another Call for Entries for EXOTIQUE 4. Those who don't know what that is, Google it. That's what it's for. Best of all, it's FREE to enter, good for someone on a very tightly budgeted starving art hobo like myself.

Also, I'm taking up a short comic strip venture with some dudes from the UK who runs their own webcomic, they've seen my stuff on Deviantart and want to work with me. No pay, just good opp for publicity and exposure. That's what I'm working for these days. Can't say much about the project, yet. I still have that Star Wars short storyboards to finish up. I'm getting pretty busy here. :D

Update - Portrait Painting 1

Made some update. Tried fixing the hand, and the face too.

I compare it to the ref pic and there still seems to be something wrong, especially the face. I'll have to work on it some more.

Can the Lakers make history and win the rest of the games at Boston? No one knows, I hear it's tougher in Boston, but I don't think I'm gonna watch. The suspense, and the nerve, really kills you.

Thursday night

I know what I'll be doing this weekend.

And no it does not include watching the remaining games of the NBA Finals.

The Lakers had a big chance, and they BLEWWWWW IT! What was wrong with Kobe, why was he less than 20 points overall last night?? They all gotta be burying their heads in the water bucket right now from having banged their heads in frustration too much.

Can they win 3 in a row? *pfft* Not with the way they're going.

Update - Contrast

Finished with this one. Took me 6 hrs tops. In Photoshop.

Lakers barely made it last night. The Celtics are like flies that stick to you in clumps when you're sticky and smelly. Will see if the Lakers can continue the momentum tomorrow and on Sunday; that's the only time left they got on their home courts. Who knows, maybe this Finals will go all the way into Game 7. That'd be exciting to see.

New IFX Challenge - Contrast

The topic is pretty self explanatory.

I'm probably going a bit out of line here, but the last challenge was so cool I wanted to keep working at it. Here's what I got so far:

There's more work to be done, but for now this computer is giving me headache; stupid low RAMs.

Portrait painting 1

I decided to start doing some portrait stuff after the last portrait I did about the Guardian. I think it's important to get the facial anatomy straight, so some practice with the faces is definitely needed.

My first portrait - I guess I got the idea from an old Korean folk song my late grandmother used to like. And most of them is often sad and tragic, like this one about a woman who's waiting feverishly for her lover who would never return to her. I don't know exactly if that's what the song is about, but that's my guess. Pretty much all Korean stories nowadays in the TV follows that same story.

As always I'm using Photoshop.

WIP I - some real rough outline and finer line drawing, keeping the facial proportions in check. I do use references for this, I have a bunch of old Nordstrom catalogs that has some great model pics that is great help to me:

WIP II - Blocking in general shadows. I use purple as the whole painting is going to have a very bluish hue to it, since the theme is melancholy.

WIP III - I add a blue wash to the canvas and overlay with colors on separate layer set on Multiply.

WIP IV - I start brushing over with Hard Round Brush with Other Dynamics checked. I use Eyedrops to sample colors and adjust the values. I later decide to use Gradient to the BG.

WIP V - Some more painting and onto the details now, the most laborious part of the painting process. I make note of appropriate highlights/shadows and keeping in mind the concept of reflected light(something I have neglected far too long), more detail work on the flowers and the pin, I use a customized spatter brush for the finer lines on the hair, and occasionally I use Curves and Hue/Sat. I also notice some errors in the anatomical structures of the face, and fix that with the Lasso.

Yes, this is still a wip and I'm still finding some areas that can be improved. Keep in mind I'm keeping it loose and sketchy, no smooth tight finishes intended in any of my work. So far so good, it took me about four hours so far. Now I'll just turn it in for crits and then finish it up at another time.

Hope you enjoy my process. Ciao.

Character sketch series 2

I told you I'd have more character sketches in.

The theme is Asian historic warriors, tribal and imperial. I guess it's from too much Korean saguk dramas.

Finished, with more adjustments and texturing:

Looks okay. Maybe a few more work here and there, but I'll save that for later.

Update - Giger Challenge

I've been busy as a bee trying to get this done before the deadline.

And although this one's over I still like to go back and rework some areas. I admit the face lacked some volume, so I tried fixing it here:

And I added some stylish flames around her so you'd know for sure she's the Guardian of FIRE.

I don't know what to title the other one, it was just some random stuff I came up with, so I have no idea. Maybe just "After Giger"?

Sunday, June 1, 2008

So I just got done watching the MTV Movie Awards...nothing special, nothing funny. Only worthy thing was the return of Wayne's World (that movie was crackin' back in '94) and the Lifetime Achievement given to none other than Adam Sandler (I actually wanna go see the new one YOU DON'T MESS WITH THE ZOHAN he looked smashin in that hair and accent lol).

TUDORS finale today, yay, we all know how Anne (Henry VIII's 2nd wife) got one head shorter in history, I felt sorry for little Elizabeth being called a 'bastard' but we all know that too how that story's gonna end. Nice way to wrap up the season is Henry gobbling down some bread buried beneath a body of a swan...kinda disturbing, yet poetic.

Back to work now...

6 down, 6 to go...

Gosh, is it June already???

This computer is soooooo slow today, I can't do anything! I'll have to run AdAware and stuff.

I'm wondering if I should try this next challenge, the one involving the art of HR GIGER. You can see his website here...or you can just Google him. I guess he's the creator of ALIEN creature.

Ciao...until this computer starts getting its acts back together...
